Nowadays, the trend appears to be (and is the same in my family) that parents, particularly younger children, are becoming “helicopter” parents. Unlike when I grew up, somewhat rurally, left to my own devices to entertain myself running through fields, valleys, and forests, catching frogs and whatnot… Today, parents are ever-more surrounding & monitoring their kids. I believe the news is very much responsible but today people have an irrational fear that something horrible is very likely to befall their child at any moment and they must constantly surround their kids to protect them from all these evil people waiting to unleash their reign of terror. As children become more uncommon in countries with an acute fertility rate decline, these hypersensitivities are only going to increase because people who have never raised one, even been near one, can simply not have the same perspectives on children as someone who has.
