Spells for beginners

You might be surprised to learn that almost everyone has performed a spell at some point in their life, even if they didn’t realize it. Think about making a wish as you blow out birthday candles, sending dandelion seeds into the wind, or tossing a coin into a wishing well. If you’ve done any of these, you’ve already experienced your first spell. Every spell begins with a wish, a hope, or a longing, and it’s the belief and visualization of the outcome that gives a spell its power. There are many types of spells and various ways to cast them, which I’ll discuss in future videos. Some spells, especially the more powerful ones, may require the combined energy of several witches or even a coven, because all spells—no matter how simple—draw on energy. The more energy you put in, the stronger the result.

Many people have asked, or will ask, if I can cast spells for them or provide spells. My answer is always the same: “I’m sorry, but no. I firmly believe that for a spell to truly work, it needs to be created by you.” It makes sense—if you don’t invest your own energy and intention into your spell, how can you expect it to be effective?

One of the simplest spells for beginners is to write your intention on a piece of paper, roll it up, and burn it in a safe, open fire. The burning ritual is a time-honored practice among witches for releasing the past, letting go of negative emotions, or clearing away unwanted energy. It’s easy to do and can be performed whenever you feel the need. As the paper turns to ash and the smoke drifts away, imagine your burdens leaving you as well. While the paper burns, recite this spell aloud.

With all my will and all my might

I free myself from my past

To release my burdens in the flames below

Into the air and wind they go

So mote it be

This is a spell I personally wrote and use during the burning ritual.

You can adapt the burning ritual for other purposes, such as healing or protection spells. Always remember to perform this outdoors and away from anything flammable. See? It’s not so difficult. When crafting your own spells, focus on your desired outcome—the more thought and energy you put in, the more powerful your spell will be.
